Excursion of intermediate difficulty along a snowy route in the wood around the village. The tour goes into a wood of firs, larches and bushes of mugo pine, near a pasture with the Malga Ritorto alpine hut. Malga Ritorto is in a place with an amazing view of the Brenta Dolomites eastward and the Adamello glacier southward/westward. Not to be missed a glimpse at sunset, when the rocks of the Dolomites becomes red. Thanks to the very good sunny exposure, Malga Ritorto is a natural terrace where enjoying the sun from morning to late afternoon.

Author’s recommendation

Safety information

Experience walking along irregular mountain trails is recommended. In the event of fresh snow, snowshoes are also recommended. Be careful of ice when temperatures are particularly low.

As you might imagine, the accessibility of these mountain trails depends entirely on the conditions found at any given time, such as the weather and other natural and environmental conditions. Therefore, before you set out, you should check the status of the trail by contacting alpine guides, lodge operators, or the local tourist office or park information office.

Destination

Ritorto alpine hut

Turn-by-turn directions

Head south from the pharmacy in the center of town and continue along Via Adamello until you reach Pizzeria Pappagallo. Past the pizzeria, take the trail that runs flat (initially) from the far end of the parking area. When you reach the first crossroads (15 min.), turn right and follow the signs for Malga Ritorto as the trail begins to rise. Once you’ve completed the first steep climb through ample switchbacks in the trail (which is the most difficult section of the itinerary), you will reach a flatter area at an altitude of 1,660 meters (5,450 ft, 20 min.). From here the trail is less steep as you head south along a series of false flats to a clearing beneath Malga Ritorto (20 min.). Continue straight to the south and back onto a forestry road of accessible steepness, which will take you to your destination at an altitude of 1,746m (5,728 ft). Follow the same route in reverse to get back to Madonna di Campiglio.
