This mid-altitude outing offers an enchanting view of the Adamello-Presanella mountain range.

This physically exerting, but not particularly difficult itinerary runs along well-beaten, well-marked trails and is recommended for families with children aged 6 to 8. Here, you are likely to hear the call of the marmot and, if you’re lucky, even see a group of these rodents, which often come out of their dens to enjoy the sun or search for food. The ascent via lift and the amazing view make this a lovely, relaxing outing for an alpine picnic.

Author’s recommendation

Be sure to bring a camera! The vast fields with spectacular views of the Adamello-Presanella range are great spots for a picnic with the whole family.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the intermediate station of the Grostè gondola lift, follow the signs for Spinale lake.

As you descend, you will first pass Camp Centener and then continue along trail SAT 331 until you reach a crossroads just above Spinale lake. Turn left here and continue on over a number of karstic humps, then descend gradually to the intersection with trail SAT 382. Take this trail in the direction of Rifugio G. Graffer.

Once at the lodge, follow the signs for Giro dell’Imperatore (Tour of the Emperor). After about 200 meters, the trail curves to the left and heads down to lovely plateaus at the base of Pietra Grande.

Continue on here through the pastureland as you climb up to the col of Dòs del Sparavér. Cross this pass, then descend to the north and cross the pasture to Malga Vagliana. From here, in just a few minutes you will reach a fissure near the arrival station of the Vagliana gondola lift. A final flat section followed by a brief climb completes the circuit as you return to the intermediate station of the Grostè gondola lift.

Getting there

Reach the Grostè cableway, 1 km northwards Madonna di Campiglio along the main road SS239.

To reach the cableway coming from Pinzolo, take the tunnel at the beginning of Madonna di Campiglio - avoiding the centre of the village - and go on towards Campo Carlo Magno for about 1 k after the tunnel exit.

Coming from Dimaro, instead, pass Campo Carlo Magno and, after about 800 meters, arrive at the Grostè cableway.
