Ask someone to show you the strange rock formations, just beyond the Passo dei XII Apostoli, from which the mountain, the pass and the refuge get their name (“the 12 Apostles”). The refuge was built in the early 20th century in one of the most remote (and scenic) places in the Brenta with spectacular views of the Adamello and Presanella. Run for many years by the Salvaterra family, the refuge is currently owned by SAT (Association of Trentino Mountaineers) and run by mountain guide Aldo Turri, who, with other guides, organises beginners’ climbing courses for his guests. Every year on the last Sunday in July all the fallen of the war in the mountains are remembered here in the picturesque little church carved into the rock. Open From 20 June to late September Before leaving for your hike, always contact the manager to verify the actual opening of the mountain hut Walks All the walks from the refuge are challenging and require suitable equipment. The very difficult Castiglioni via ferrata goes to the Rifugio Silvio Agostini in Val d'Ambiez (2 ½ hours, difficulty EEA). You can get to the Rifugio Maria e Alberto Ai Brentei by way of the Daniele Martinazzi via ferrata, a very difficult 3-hour mountaineering route (difficulty EEA). Equally difficult are the Sentiero dell’Ideale path and the Brentari via ferrata to the Tosa and Tommaso Pedrotti refuges (3 hours).

Getting there

From Pinzolo take the Dos del Sabion cable car and from there continue on the footpath that runs down to Passo Bregn de l'Ors (45 minutes, difficulty E); from there take footpath no. 307 to Piano di Nardis - Lago Asciutto (30 minutes, difficulty E) and the start of the “Scala Santa” (Holy Stairway), a stretch of path over scree and uneven broken rock, that leads to the refuge (approximately 1 ¾ hours, difficulty EE). From Stenico by car follow the signs for Ragoli; after 4 km turn right onto the road for Val d'Algone and continue to Malga Movlina (14 Km, the first 7 km on asphalt; paying car park); from there take footpath no. 354 to Passo Bregn de l'Ors then continue on footpath no. 307 (3 hours, difficulty EE). From San Antonio di Mavignola follow the dirt road as far as the barrier (car park), and from there continue on foot: it’s about 45 minutes to Lago d’Agola and about 3 hours in total to the refuge (difficulty E, EE ).
